Justin Pearson Campaign Rally Draws Big Support
More than 1,000 people gathered in Memphis to support Democratic state Representative Justin Pearson as he campaigns for Congress. The event came after four fatal shootings linked to members of the Memphis Safe Task Force during the past two months.
The rally took place at a church in the Hickory Hill area. Supporters filled the building to hear Pearson speak about public safety, voting rights, and the future of Memphis. The event also brought together local families, community leaders, and national Democratic lawmakers.
Pearson told the crowd that the election is an important moment for the city and the country. He said people must stay united and continue working for change. He also thanked supporters for standing with him during the campaign.
The congressman hopeful said the district faces major challenges. He called for stronger communities, fair representation, and equal opportunities for every family. He said residents should continue to take part in the democratic process and make their voices heard.
Several well-known Democratic members of Congress joined Pearson at the rally. They praised his work as a state lawmaker and his efforts to support local communities.
One speaker said Pearson has always been present during difficult times. She said he has worked for families, defended civil rights, and remained active even during major political debates. She added that his leadership has inspired many people across Tennessee.
Pearson became widely known in 2023 after he and another Democratic lawmaker were removed from the Tennessee legislature following a protest that called for stronger gun safety laws after the Nashville school shooting. Soon after, local officials voted to return him to his seat.
Since then, Pearson has continued to build support among progressive voters. His campaign focuses on voting rights, environmental issues, education, and public safety.
This year's congressional race comes after Tennessee lawmakers approved new congressional district boundaries. The changes divided the state's former Ninth Congressional District into three separate districts.
The previous district had long been the state's only Democratic congressional district and included a large Black population in Memphis. The new map changed the political balance, making the race more competitive.
Speakers at the rally said voting remains one of the most important ways for people to shape the future of their communities. They encouraged residents to take part in the upcoming primary election.
Another Democratic lawmaker told supporters that many cities across the country face similar challenges. She said communities should stay engaged and continue pushing for economic opportunity, public safety, and equal representation.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also addressed the crowd. She spoke about the civil rights movement and Memphis' place in American history. She said the city has long played an important role in the fight for equality and justice.
She praised Pearson's work before entering politics. She noted that he spent years organizing local residents around environmental concerns in southwest Memphis. According to her, those efforts helped stop major industrial projects after community members raised environmental questions.
Environmental issues remained a major topic during the event. Speakers discussed pollution concerns in parts of Memphis and called for stronger protections for neighborhoods located near industrial facilities.
Pearson is one of four candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the congressional seat. The Democratic primary is scheduled for August 6. The winner will move on to the general election later this year.
The rally also included families of people who died during recent encounters involving the Memphis Safe Task Force. Several relatives stood beside Pearson as he spoke to supporters.
One of the recent cases involved 20-year-old Tywin Johnson. Officials said National Guard soldiers responded to reports of a robbery suspect before the shooting. Authorities said Johnson was armed, but they have not released additional details about what happened.
Johnson's family has asked officials to release surveillance video from the area. Authorities have not yet made the footage public. Reports also state that the soldiers involved were not wearing body cameras during the incident.
Pearson said recent events have increased concern among many Memphis residents. He expressed sympathy for the affected families and said community members deserve transparency and accountability. He also called for continued public engagement as the city prepares for the upcoming election.
The rally ended with supporters encouraging residents to vote and stay involved in local issues. Organizers said community participation will play an important role as Memphis prepares for the next stage of the congressional campaign.
