Permanent Daylight Saving Time Wins House Vote
The US House of Representatives has approved a bill that could end the long-running practice of changing clocks twice each year. The proposal would make Permanent Daylight Saving Time the standard across most of the United States if it becomes law. Lawmakers passed the measure by a vote of 308 to 117 on Tuesday. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it will face another round of debate before it can become law. If the Senate approves the proposal, it will take the final steps needed to change the current system. The bill has gained support from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Many leaders say people are ready to stop changing their clocks every spring and fall. The proposal has also received public support from former President Donald Trump. Before the full House vote, the House Rules Committee approved the measure by a 6 to 4 vote. That cleared the way for lawmakers to debate and vote on the bill. The legislation is known as the Sunshine Protection Act. It was introduced by Representative Vern Buchanan of Florida. The bill would make daylight saving time the permanent time standard for most of the country. It would also allow states to choose permanent standard time instead if they decide not to follow the new system. Most states now move their clocks forward by one hour in the spring. They move them back by one hour in the fall. This system has been in place for many years. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not take part in these clock changes. If the bill becomes law, people in many parts of the country would no longer change their clocks twice each year. Instead, daylight saving time would remain in place throughout the year. Supporters say this change would bring longer daylight during the evening in the fall and winter months. They believe more evening sunlight could encourage outdoor activities and help many local businesses that depend on customer visits after work. Backers of the bill also point to studies that suggest ending clock changes could improve daily life. They say fewer time changes may help reduce traffic crashes, lower some types of crime, and support better public health by removing the need for people to adjust their schedules twice a year. Representative Buchanan said many Americans no longer support changing clocks every six months. He said research suggests a permanent system could offer health and safety benefits while making life simpler for families and workers. Donald Trump also praised the proposal after it advanced in Congress. He said keeping daylight saving time all year would give people longer and brighter evenings. He described the plan as popular and easy to support. Daylight saving time first appeared in the early 20th century. It was introduced to help save energy and make better use of daylight during wartime. Over the years, the practice continued, but opinions about it have changed. Many Americans now question whether changing clocks still serves its original purpose. Several earlier efforts to make daylight saving time permanent did not become law. Even so, support has grown in recent years among lawmakers and many state governments. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 19 states have already passed laws that would allow permanent daylight saving time if Congress gives final approval. Those laws cannot take effect unless federal law changes. Not everyone agrees that permanent daylight saving time is the best option. Some sleep experts say permanent standard time matches the body's natural sleep cycle more closely. They believe standard time may support healthier sleep patterns and better overall well-being. The debate over the best time system is likely to continue as the Senate reviews the bill. Lawmakers will now decide whether the proposal should move forward and reshape how millions of Americans measure time throughout the year.
