The United States has taken a new step in its effort to help end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Senior envoys from President Donald Trump's administration met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. Both sides said they discussed possible ways to move the peace process forward. The White House said the meeting focused on plans for the next stage of negotiations. Officials said more details about the proposal could be shared in the coming weeks. The US team was also expected to travel to Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian leaders on Sunday. The Moscow meeting comes as Washington tries to restart peace talks after months of slow progress. The war has continued for more than four years and remains one of the largest conflicts in Europe in recent history. According to the White House, the US envoys discussed practical ideas for ending the fighting. Officials described the talks as productive and said they hope to continue the same level of cooperation during meetings in Ukraine. Russian officials also confirmed the meeting took place inside the Kremlin. A senior Kremlin aide said the American delegation presented several ideas for a possible settlement. He did not explain the details of those ideas. Russian officials said the discussion was open and direct. However, they also repeated that Moscow believes it can still reach its military goals in eastern Ukraine. Russia has continued to say that it wants control over more territory in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has rejected those demands and says it will not give up its land or its right to choose its own security partnerships. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to the Moscow talks by saying Russia launched attacks on Kyiv and Boryspil airport before the US delegation arrived in Ukraine. He said the timing appeared to be linked to the planned visit by American officials. Zelenskyy said Ukraine had taken note of the attacks and would adjust its military operations in response. He also said Ukraine would not create any obstacle for diplomatic talks. Ukraine has kept its airspace closed to civilian flights since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Because of that, most foreign leaders and officials travel to Kyiv by train instead of by air. Before the talks, both Russia and Ukraine agreed not to strike each other's capitals for three days. The temporary pause was meant to support the diplomatic effort while negotiations continued. The White House hopes this short period of reduced attacks can help create space for further discussions. It is not clear if both sides will continue the pause after the talks end. President Trump said on Friday that his administration had developed a new proposal to end the war. He did not provide details about the plan but said his representatives were bringing it to Moscow. Trump has made ending the Ukraine war one of the main goals of his second term. His administration has continued to push for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, but previous efforts have produced little progress. During the Moscow meeting, Putin welcomed the American delegation and thanked Trump through his visitors. Russian television showed footage of the meeting inside a large Kremlin hall. Despite the diplomatic effort, fighting continued across Ukraine on Saturday. Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks killed at least seven people in different parts of the country. Some of the deaths happened near Kyiv, while others were reported in the Dnipro region. Local officials said missiles struck a factory where workers were on duty. More people were injured in attacks on homes and public buildings. Emergency crews responded to several damaged sites after overnight strikes. Russian drones also hit a shopping center in the Mykolaiv region. Officials said the building was damaged and at least two people were injured. Emergency workers said they had to stop rescue work several times because of the risk of additional drone strikes. The conflict has become more intense in recent weeks. Both Russia and Ukraine have increased long-range drone and missile attacks against military and infrastructure targets. Ukraine has carried out strikes on Russian oil facilities, military bases, and logistics centers. Ukrainian officials say those attacks are aimed at weakening Russia's military supply system. Russia has also expanded attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Air defense systems continue to face heavy pressure during repeated waves of drones and missiles. Large differences remain between the two sides on the main issues of any peace deal. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine give up four regions claimed by Moscow and stay out of NATO. Ukraine says those conditions are unacceptable. Kyiv insists that its territory and sovereignty cannot be part of a settlement. The war began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or injured, and millions have been forced to leave their homes. The latest diplomatic meetings have raised hopes for renewed negotiations, but no agreement has been announced.
