Reading and Leeds Festival has changed in a big way. Dance music now plays a major role at the event. Young fans are moving toward DJs and dance acts, while some rock acts draw smaller crowds. The festival has long been a key event for young people in the UK. Many fans attend after their school exams. It can feel like a first taste of freedom before the next stage of life. But the festival has faced questions about its identity in recent years. Organisers tried to group some days by music style in 2025. This year, they took a different path. The 2026 event has a much wider mix of sounds. New stages have also added more choice for fans. One new area, the Ballroom, has a bright and bold design. The second stage offers a wide range of acts. Fans can move from rap and rock to jungle and pop. DJ EJ, Geese and 4am Kru were among the acts to appear there. Slovakian pop singer Adéla also brought strong energy to the stage. Her set included her hit song Ain't in LA. She also connected with fans in Leeds during her show. Other acts added to the mix. London singer Dexter brought soft pop sounds. Australian DJ Mall Grab mixed grime with game style sounds. Bar Italia also gave fans a lively rock set. The main stages showed the change in crowd taste too. Kasabian led Thursday night but failed to match the energy found at the dance stage in the woods. That stage, known as LS23, became a major draw. Its mix of dance sounds gave young fans the kind of night they wanted. Chase and Status brought drum and bass to the main stage on Friday. Their large set showed how dance music has moved closer to the heart of the festival. Saturday offered a strong mix of music. Charli XCX and Fontaines DC shared the main stage spotlight. Fontaines DC played new songs from their upcoming album Dopamine Chamber. Their set included the song Marianne and a new track called Happy for You. The band gave one of the strongest rock sets of the weekend. A new stage called the Canopy also drew attention. It replaced the BBC Introducing stage and focused on new artists. The stage faced criticism over its line-up. Some fans questioned the choice of acts linked to famous families. The stage featured young artists with links to well-known music and sports names. Tooth and Sade Olutola were among the acts that stood out. Both received short sets despite strong reviews from festival fans. Dance music remained the biggest story of the weekend. DJs such as Josh Baker, Omar+, Max Dean and Luke Dean attracted large crowds. Irish producer Kettama also drew one of the biggest crowds of the event. His set showed the growing demand for fast and direct dance music. The Warehouse stage became a key meeting point for dance fans. It looked like a large club space and held much of the weekend's crowd energy. High demand also caused problems. Sets by Silva Bumpa and Skepta with East End Dubs were cancelled after crowd pressure around the stage. Some fans called for dance acts to move to larger areas. The response showed just how much dance music has grown at the festival. The contrast was clear on Sunday. Josh Baker played at the same time as Dave. Despite guest appearances from Kano, Tems and Central Cee, Dave's crowd was much smaller than other headline crowds. Hedex offered one of the clearest signs of the festival's change. During his set, he used a fast version of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. The song once matched the sound and spirit of the festival. This time, fans first sang along before the track turned into a drum and bass mix. The crowd soon returned to dancing. That moment captured the new mood at Reading and Leeds. The festival still has room for rock, pop and rap. However, the 2026 event shows that dance music now has a much bigger place in its future.
