Canada has stood by the name Lake Ontario as a dispute with US President Donald Trump grows. Ontario has put up a large sign near Grimsby that says “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” The move came after Trump ordered US federal agencies to use the name Lake America for the lake. The order is part of a wider trade dispute between the United States and Canada. The Lake Ontario name dispute has also reached online maps. Google Maps now shows Lake America to users in the United States. Users in Canada still see Lake Ontario. People in other countries can see both names. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected the name change. He said the name Lake Ontario has deep roots and comes from an Indigenous Wendat word. The word is linked to a meaning such as “the lake is beautiful” or “the lake is great.” The name has been used for more than 400 years. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also spoke out against the move. He placed the large sign near Grimsby in response to the US order. Ford said the name Lake Ontario will remain long after Trump leaves office. He said Canada was standing up for itself as the two nations deal with trade issues. The sign is about two stories high. It has become a clear public sign of the dispute between the two neighbors. Trump signed the order on Thursday. He said the lake would be called Lake America by US federal agencies. The order changes the name used by the US federal Geographic Names Information System. Google also made a similar change after Trump ordered US agencies to use Gulf of America for the Gulf of Mexico. The US version of Google Maps now uses that name. Another video showed an image of Trump removing a Lake Ontario sign and replacing it with a Lake America sign. The video also showed Trump dancing to “YMCA” by the Village People. The song has been used often at his public events. The name fight comes as the US and Canada face a major trade dispute. The United States has placed a 50 percent tariff on Canadian steel. Canada has answered with tariffs of its own. Talks between the two sides have stalled. The lake name has now become a visible part of the wider dispute. Other Canadian leaders have also criticized the move. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said Trump was trying to repeat the impact of his earlier move over the Gulf of Mexico. Wendat Nation Grand Chief Pierre Picard said the change raises concerns about Indigenous history. He said the lake’s name is part of the culture and identity of the Wendat people.
