Grief healing journey woman rebuilt lifeafter loss
A woman has shared how she rebuilt her life after losing her husband of 35 years, followed by her sister and her father. Her story is one of deep grief, emotional collapse, and slow recovery through small daily steps, new habits, and a renewed sense of direction.
She met her husband Graham when she was 18 at university. They stayed together for 35 years and built a strong partnership. They worked full time and supported each other in different ways. While she focused on travel, writing, and personal goals, he managed most of the home tasks and practical work. Their life was stable, balanced, and full of shared plans.
In 2017, Graham was diagnosed with asbestos related lung cancer. Doctors gave him limited time to live. The couple chose to face the illness with hope instead of fear. They continued working, travelling, and spending time with friends. They called this approach their Positivity Project.
They also created a notebook where they recorded positive thoughts, medical updates, and daily gratitude. They wrote about things that gave them hope, including supportive messages and small achievements. They also listed simple daily gratitude, such as being alive, being in love, and having family and friends.
After years of treatment, Graham’s condition worsened and the cancer spread. He died at home in September 2021 at the age of 58, with his wife by his side. In the days after his death, she struggled to process the loss but focused on surviving each day.
Soon after, she sold their long-time home and moved to a coastal town. She then relocated to South Africa to care for her father, who had dementia and prostate cancer. During this already difficult period, her sister went missing and later died in tragic circumstances. These repeated losses left her emotionally broken and unsure of how to continue life.
She described feeling as if her identity had disappeared. She was no longer a wife, sister, or daughter. At times, she questioned the purpose of her life. Support from a close friend helped her see that grief was not something to erase, but something to live alongside.
She began to rebuild her life slowly. She tried different activities, including swimming in cold water, massage therapy, and other wellness practices. Some did not help, but cold water swimming gave her energy, social connection, and mental relief. It became an important part of her recovery.
Over time, she started to rely on what she called an inner compass. Instead of overthinking decisions, she listened to her instincts and body signals. If something felt right, she followed it. If it felt wrong, she stepped away. This helped her rebuild confidence and set boundaries in relationships and daily life.
This approach also helped her move away from people pleasing. She became more focused on her own emotional safety and well being. She ended connections that felt harmful and allowed healthier relationships to grow.
She also began rebuilding practical life skills she had previously shared with her husband. Tasks like home repairs, dealing with tradespeople, and financial decisions became part of her new independence. She learned through trial and error and slowly became more self sufficient.
Running became another key part of her recovery. It gave her structure, stress relief, and a sense of achievement. She returned to marathon training and set new long term goals, including completing multiple endurance races in memory of her husband.
She explains that grief has not disappeared, but it has changed in shape. It remains present in her life, but it no longer defines everything. She describes her healing as a process of growth around grief, where life expands again even after deep loss.
Today, she continues to build a future shaped by resilience, self trust, and purpose. Her story reflects a long grief healing journey marked by pain, adaptation, and the gradual return of joy.
