Swalwell assault allegations rock CA gov race
Congressman Eric Swalwell is facing growing political pressure after sexual assault allegations emerged during his campaign for California governor. He has strongly denied all claims and says he will continue his race. The controversy has quickly become a major issue in the state’s competitive Democratic primary. Supporters and critics are reacting as the story spreads across media and political circles. Swalwell says the accusations are false and says he will defend his name. The situation has created a tense moment in his campaign and raised questions about his political future.
In a video posted on social media, Swalwell rejected the allegations in strong terms. He said the claims of sexual assault “did not happen” and called them completely false. He promised to fight the accusations with full effort. He also said he is not perfect and has made mistakes in judgment in the past. However, he said those issues are personal and separate from the current allegations. He apologized to his wife for the public attention and said he regrets any stress caused to his family. He also thanked supporters and said he appreciates their trust. He added that he plans to continue his campaign and will speak more soon after spending time with family and close friends.
Earlier reports published by a San Francisco newspaper described claims from a woman who said she worked for Swalwell. She alleged that she had sexual encounters with him while he was her supervisor and that she was later assaulted when she was unable to consent due to intoxication. The report also said it reviewed messages linked to the alleged incident. The woman also spoke to another media outlet, and additional women reportedly shared concerns about misconduct in interviews. These claims have not been independently verified. Swalwell’s campaign has called the allegations false and has sent legal letters to some individuals involved, asking them to withdraw their statements.
The allegations have triggered strong reactions from political leaders. Several senior Democrats have called for Swalwell to withdraw from the governor race. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries urged him to step aside. California Governor Gavin Newsom said the matter should be investigated carefully and with transparency. Senator Adam Schiff withdrew his endorsement. Senator Ruben Gallego also removed his support, saying the claims must be taken seriously. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the matter should be handled outside of the campaign and called for accountability and proper review.
Swalwell’s campaign has also seen internal disruption. Reports say several staff members have left the team after the allegations became public. His rivals in the governor race have also spoken out. Some called for him to pause or end his campaign, while others expressed support for the women who came forward. Republican candidate Steve Hilton criticized the Democratic Party and used the situation to attack its leadership. Meanwhile, Swalwell’s campaign had recently positioned him as a leading contender in the race, focusing on issues like affordability and working families.
Swalwell, who has served in Congress since 2013 representing California’s East Bay area, is a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump. The situation has shifted focus from policy to personal and legal questions. The investigation and public response are expected to continue in the coming days. His decision to stay in the race signals a continuing political fight as pressure increases from multiple sides.
