Sentnor Strike Secures US Win Over Canada
The US women’s national team extended their dominant defensive run with a 1-0 win over Canada in the SheBelieves Cup. Ally Sentnor scored early in the second half, converting a corner kick to secure the victory for the hosts.
This marked the seventh consecutive clean sheet for the USWNT, stretching their defensive streak to 714 minutes since last conceding on 23 October against Portugal. Canada has now gone six games without a win against the United States, with their last success being the 2021 Olympic semi-final.
In the first half, Canada allowed the US to control possession. The home team held 68% of the ball and outshot Canada 9-2. Sentnor’s best chance before halftime came when she slipped past Manchester City defender Jade Rose, but Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan blocked her near-post attempt, sending the ball to the side netting.
Sentnor started up front after coming off the bench in the US’s 2-0 win over Argentina. Her coordination with teammates Alyssa Thompson, Rose Lavelle, and Trinity Rodman kept Canada on the back foot, though midfielder Sam Coffey acknowledged at halftime that the team could have been more patient with shot selection.
Canada grew more dangerous in the second half, attacking through left back Gisele Thompson and counterattacks led by Nichelle Prince. In the 49th minute, Prince found Cloé Lacasse in the box, but the US defense effectively blocked the attempt.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute. Lavelle delivered a low corner from the left, which bounced through multiple players before reaching Sentnor. She controlled the ball and finished to the far post, beating Sheridan and giving the US the lead.
Sheridan has rotated starts with Aston Villa’s Sabrina D’Angelo over the past year, but regardless of the goalkeeper, Canada has now gone eleven matches without keeping a clean sheet, losing seven of those games.
The rest of the match featured occasional shots from both teams but was largely controlled by the US. Rodman played 69 minutes, a strong performance after a prior back injury. Emma Sears made her USWNT debut in her hometown of Columbus.
Both teams will complete their SheBelieves Cup matches on Saturday. Canada faces Argentina at 12:30 p.m. ET, followed by the US against Colombia at 3:30 p.m. ET.
