Chiefs’ Rashee Rice Faces Assault Lawsuit
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is facing a civil lawsuit in Texas filed by a former girlfriend alleging multiple assaults over a two-year period. The suit was filed by Dacoda Jones, the mother of Rice’s two children, in Dallas County on Monday, seeking more than $1 million in damages. Jones claims in the lawsuit that Rice assaulted her while she was pregnant, with incidents occurring between December 2023 and July 2025. According to court documents, the pair lived together in Victory Park, Texas, and Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The lawsuit alleges that Rice repeatedly “grabbed, choked, strangled, pushed, thrown, scratched, hit and headbutted” Jones. It further states that he assaulted her with inanimate objects. The complaint also describes Rice engaging in violent and controlling behaviors, including “throwing objects, destroying property, punching walls, breaking furniture, and locking her out in the middle of the night.” Jones is seeking compensation for physical pain, mental anguish, physical impairment, disfigurement, medical expenses, and lost earnings, both past and future. One of Jones’s attorneys declined to comment to ESPN. Rice, who has not been criminally charged in this matter, and his agents did not respond to requests for comment from ESPN and the Athletic. The Chiefs released a statement confirming awareness of the lawsuit and said they are in communication with the National Football League. The NFL noted the case “remains under review.” Jones previously shared posts on Instagram last month that appeared to show injuries consistent with abuse. In a since-deleted post, she wrote that she had endured years of abuse and was “tired of keeping quiet” and “protecting his image.” She added that she and Rice ended their relationship months ago, but she has continued facing challenges, including delays in receiving financial support and attempts by Rice to remove her and the children from their home. Jones wrote, “I’ve protected his image too long and I’m done doing that. It’s time to protect my peace, protect my children and stand up for myself.” Rice, 25, began the 2025 NFL season serving a six-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension stemmed from a multi-car crash in Dallas during the 2024 season that left several people injured. Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges in district court: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The crash involved six vehicles. Reports state that Rice and four friends fled the scene before checking on the injured. He was sentenced to five years of deferred probation, 30 days in jail, and ordered to pay over $115,000 in restitution to the crash victims. The civil lawsuit alleges ongoing abusive behavior during the relationship and paints a picture of coercion and control. Jones claims that even after their breakup, Rice has attempted to manipulate living arrangements and financial support, contributing to what she describes as a continuing pattern of hardship and instability for her and their children. The case highlights ongoing concerns about athlete conduct off the field, particularly in situations where personal relationships intersect with potential legal violations. Legal experts note that civil suits such as this can proceed independently of criminal charges, and plaintiffs can seek substantial financial remedies for past harm. The NFL and Chiefs have not indicated any immediate action beyond monitoring the situation. However, the league’s review could influence Rice’s standing with the team and potential future disciplinary measures under its personal conduct policy. As the civil proceedings move forward, both Rice’s professional career and personal reputation face scrutiny. Advocates for victims of domestic abuse emphasize that civil lawsuits are an important tool for accountability and compensation, especially when criminal action may not be pursued. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how athlete-related domestic abuse claims are handled in both public perception and legal forums.
