Jordan Stolz Wins 500m, Breaks Olympic Record
American speed skating star Jordan Stolz added another gold medal to his Winter Olympics campaign by winning the men’s 500m in record-breaking fashion. Competing at the Milano Cortina Games, Stolz completed the race in 33.77 seconds, setting a new Olympic record and securing his second gold of the Games.
The 21-year-old’s performance was historic. Every skater on the podium finished below the previous Olympic record of 34.32 seconds. Stolz led the field, followed by the Netherlands’ Jenning de Boo in 33.88 seconds and Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil in 34.26 seconds. Stolz’s winning margin of 0.11 seconds marked the largest gap in an Olympic 500m since 1988.
The 500m is widely considered the toughest of Stolz’s individual events. One and a quarter laps leave no room for pacing or errors. Stolz combined a strong start, flawless first-corner technique, and high-speed maintenance along the back straight to achieve his victory. His approach reflected a rare balance of speed, precision, and technical skill in sprint skating.
Stolz competed in the third-to-last heat, paired with de Boo, who had ended Stolz’s two-year world title streak in March. Stolz said he prepared mentally and physically, focusing on executing every push and turn perfectly. “I thought if I skated a perfect one, I could pull it off,” he said.
This gold builds on Stolz’s earlier win in the 1000m, where he achieved the largest Olympic margin since 1984. With two golds and two Olympic records in just two races, Stolz is already one of the defining figures of the Games.
Stolz now has a chance to make history. The record for most speed skating golds at a single Winter Olympics is five, set by Eric Heiden in 1980. Stolz is also only the second man to complete the Olympic 500m-1000m double, joining Heiden.
Raised in Kewaskum, Wisconsin, Stolz developed at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee. He treats speed skating as a science, focusing on blade setup, ice conditions, and aerodynamic efficiency. His preparation and technical approach have helped him dominate the competition in Milan.
The Winter Olympics schedule now moves toward the 1500m, where Stolz could win a third gold medal. The mass start event will follow later. The last man to claim three speed skating golds in a single Winter Games was Norway’s Johann Olav Koss in 1994. Stolz is on track to challenge that historic mark.
By overcoming the 500m, Stolz removed one of the toughest challenges in his Olympic program. His second gold, along with multiple records being broken, points to a potentially historic medal haul for the young American. Fans and analysts alike are watching as Stolz continues to rewrite Olympic speed skating history in real time.
