Pentagon Cuts Harvard Ties Over ‘Woke’ Agenda
The Pentagon has announced it will end all military training, fellowships, and certificate programs with Harvard University. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the Ivy League institution as “woke” and a center of anti-military activism. Hegseth, a former weekend host on Fox News, said Harvard undermines the US armed forces by promoting leftist ideologies. He accused faculty members of portraying the military negatively and suppressing alternative viewpoints.
“Too many faculty members openly loathe our military,” Hegseth said. “They cast our armed forces in a negative light and squelch anyone who challenges their leftist leanings.” He added that the move reflects a broader Pentagon review. In the next two weeks, all departments, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force, will assess graduate programs at Ivy League and other civilian universities for active-duty service members.
The decision follows months of tension between Harvard and the Trump administration. The administration has targeted federal funding for universities it claims promote leftist ideology, antisemitism, or other views contrary to its policies. Former President Donald Trump recently stated he would seek $1 billion in damages from Harvard, alleging the university enabled antisemitism. Harvard President Alan Garber has denied these claims, calling them false and describing the pressure as an attack on academic freedom.
Hegseth has long criticized Harvard. He has written books disparaging the school and even staged a public stunt on Fox & Friends in 2022, writing “Return to sender” on his diploma. He later clarified that he never actually returned his degree.
The Pentagon emphasizes that its priority is “building lethality” and not funding programs that it believes undermine US defense objectives. Hegseth stated, “We train warriors, not wokesters. Harvard: good riddance.” He argued that millions of dollars spent on universities that oppose military goals are wasteful and counterproductive. Hegseth also criticized broader Ivy League practices, claiming institutional bias and a lack of viewpoint diversity.
Trump’s administration has clashed with universities over various policies, including pro-Palestinian protests, diversity programs, transgender policies, climate initiatives, and mask mandates. Federal funding has often been used as leverage, pushing schools to align with administration priorities. Harvard, like many research universities, relies on federal grants for its programs. The administration has pressured schools to end diversity initiatives, share information with immigration authorities, and adjust policies it deems politically motivated.
Harvard has consistently defended its programs, stating that academic freedom and independent research are core principles. The university rejected allegations that its policies or teaching promote anti-military sentiments. The end of Harvard’s military programs marks the latest escalation in a campaign by the Trump administration and its allies to reshape US higher education. The move signals stricter scrutiny for other Ivy League schools and could influence the way federal funds are allocated in the future. Hegseth concluded his announcement by framing the decision as a defense of military values and a rejection of what he describes as radical leftist influence in top universities.
