Trump ICE Crackdown Faces Backlash After Pretti Death
Donald Trump’s aggressive deployment of federal immigration agents in US cities is facing growing opposition following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. While the administration’s tactics have not ended, the mayor of Minneapolis announced that the number of federal agents would begin to scale back starting Tuesday. At the same time, Trump and his team have softened their rhetoric regarding Pretti’s death. During a White House briefing on Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt called Pretti’s death a “tragedy,” appearing to step back from prior statements labeling the intensive care nurse a “would-be assassin.” Trump said his administration was reviewing the incident and planned to send border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he would meet with Homan to discuss next steps. A federal judge also heard arguments Monday on whether to end the federal officer surge in Minneapolis, though no immediate ruling was expected. Trump and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, typically a frequent target of the president’s criticism, held a call described by both as “productive,” with Trump agreeing to consider reducing the number of federal agents and coordinating with the state on immigration enforcement targeting violent criminals. Later, Trump said he had a “very good telephone conversation” with Mayor Frey, who has been critical of Operation Metro Surge. Frey stated that some federal agents would begin leaving Minneapolis immediately, adding that he would continue pushing for the remainder to withdraw. Reports indicated that senior Border Patrol leader Gregory Bovino would depart the city as the Department of Homeland Security scales back its presence. Pretti’s death has sparked protests and community action. Demonstrators gathered outside a hotel Sunday night, prompting federal agents to respond with chemical agents. A growing memorial at the shooting site has drawn residents who continue to document ICE activities and provide support to families fearing deportation. City council member Aisha Chughtai emphasized Minneapolis’ history of resistance, asserting the community would endure despite attempts to intimidate them. Local residents and community groups have honored Pretti’s memory with candlelight vigils and music. Brass Solidarity, a band formed after George Floyd’s murder, performed at the memorial, leading chants of “Say his name!” with the crowd responding, “Alex Pretti!” The shooting has triggered bipartisan scrutiny. Republican lawmakers, including House Homeland Security Chair Andrew Garbarino, Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, and senators Thom Tillis, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski, have called for further investigation into federal immigration tactics in Minnesota. Some Republicans have expressed concern over Pretti’s death, reflecting a party divided on how to respond. Meanwhile, Democrats are threatening to withhold Department of Homeland Security funding unless reforms are included to limit federal agents’ actions in deportation operations. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed Democrats would not vote for DHS funding without changes. Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s office stated that government funds would be voted on as a single package, raising the risk of a partial government shutdown if no compromise is reached. Homan remains a controversial figure. Undercover FBI recordings from 2024 allegedly showed him accepting $50,000 in cash for promised government contract assistance. The Justice Department closed the bribery investigation citing insufficient evidence, a decision Democrats criticized as a cover-up. As federal agents begin leaving Minneapolis, Trump’s ICE crackdown faces increasing political and public scrutiny.
