Minneapolis Witnesses Say Pretti Unarmed
Two eyewitnesses have provided sworn testimony claiming that Alex Pretti, 37, an intensive care nurse, was not armed when federal officers shot him in Minneapolis on Saturday. This challenges assertions from Trump administration officials that Pretti posed a threat. The affidavits were filed in federal court in Minnesota hours after Pretti’s death. They are part of a lawsuit by the ACLU on behalf of Minneapolis protesters against officials directing the immigration crackdown. One witness, who filmed the shooting, and another, a physician living nearby, gave accounts that conflict with the federal government’s version of events. Their names were redacted in the filings. The filming witness, a woman who identified herself as a children’s entertainer, said she arrived at the scene to document federal agents’ actions. She described seeing Pretti tackled after attempting to help another bystander who had been shoved to the ground. “I didn’t see him touch any of them. He wasn’t even turned toward them. It didn’t look like he was resisting, just trying to help the woman up,” the witness said. “I didn’t see him with a gun. They threw him to the ground, and four or five agents started shooting him. He was only helping.” She said Pretti approached the agents with a camera, not a gun, contradicting the Department of Homeland Security’s statement. “I feel afraid. Only hours have passed since they shot a man in front of me. I don’t feel safe going home. I know they’re not telling the truth about what happened,” she added. The second witness, a 29-year-old doctor, said they observed the shooting from their apartment window. They reported seeing Pretti shout at federal agents but did not see him attack them or carry a weapon. After the shooting, the physician said agents initially blocked attempts to provide medical aid. “At first, the ICE agents wouldn’t let me through. But none of them were performing CPR, and I could tell he was in critical condition. I insisted on assessing him,” the witness said. Once allowed near the victim, the doctor found Pretti had multiple gunshot wounds, including at least three in his back, one in his chest, and another possibly in his neck. No pulse was detected. “I checked for a pulse, but I did not feel one,” the physician said, noting that agents seemed more focused on counting bullet wounds than performing life-saving aid. The testimony, combined with video footage, directly contradicts claims by senior Trump administration officials. These officials, including the president and homeland security leaders, had described Pretti as a gunman who approached officers threateningly. Instead, the sworn statements and video indicate Pretti was unarmed, documenting the scene and attempting to help a fellow bystander when he was shot. This case has raised concerns about federal enforcement tactics and the use of deadly force in public protests. Observers say it highlights the need for accountability and accurate reporting from government authorities. The Minneapolis community has reacted with shock and fear following Pretti’s death. Witnesses expressed concern for their own safety after publicly contradicting federal narratives. Legal experts say the affidavits could play a crucial role in the ongoing ACLU lawsuit, which challenges the conduct of federal officers in the city. Investigators are reviewing both video evidence and witness statements to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the shooting. Pretti’s death has intensified the debate over federal authority in local communities, especially concerning immigration enforcement and crowd control. Authorities have not released new comments addressing the discrepancies highlighted in the affidavits. The case remains under investigation, and the public awaits further clarification on whether Pretti posed a threat or was an unarmed bystander killed during enforcement action.
