A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Review
Bless their little cotton socks!” might be the unexpected reaction you find while watching HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the latest Game of Thrones spin-off. Set 100 years before the events of the original series, this prequel follows the adventures of Dunk—short for Ser Duncan the Tall—and his diminutive but clever squire, Egg. Dunk, portrayed by Peter Claffey, is a simple soul and former squire to the late Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, offers to be Dunk’s squire, stating, “You look like you need me the most.” Together, they journey through Westeros, navigating jousting tournaments, taverns, and the early days of Targaryen rule. The show balances medieval action with humor, endearing characters, and the charm of small-town camaraderie rather than large-scale political intrigue. Unlike Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, the episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms run around 30 minutes, focusing on character dynamics and friendship rather than high-stakes plots. While the series does include swearing, some violence, and occasional nudity, it is far gentler than the brutal original series. Gone are the grisly murders, treacherous betrayals, and pie-based horrors; in their place are tavern nights, minor misadventures, and the growing bond between knight and squire. The series’ tone raises the question of its target audience. It’s not designed for children or casual epic fantasy viewers seeking dragons and magic—though hints of Westerosi history and societal questions remain. Its appeal lies with fans who want a gentler, introspective story in the Game of Thrones universe, offering respite from the chaos of both the fictional world and our own. In the end, the charm of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms lies in its simplicity. Dunk and Egg’s adventures create a safe, whimsical space in Westeros, reminding viewers that even in a land known for violence and intrigue, stories of friendship and loyalty endure.
